lol, got bored, and figured it'd be easier to fix it with the tranny out, rather than in. Sure, if ya wanna...

Oh yeah, I think I found out why my clutch was feeling funny, especially after having it replaced in the last 3k miles. The slave cylinder for the clutch appears to be leaking slightly.

Welp I got my tranny back in today...still need to get t-case bolted up. Then it's on to parts I have sitting around the garage, JKS Motor Mount Lift, Stainless braided extended brake lines all around, grease fittings in my 4 link arms.

with all hopes she'll be up and driving tomorrow. I had to dick around with auto parts stores to find the right seal for the t-case input, so I didn't get it done before hooters tonight.

Got the tcase in tonight, and front driveshaft hooked up. Realized that with my old shifter housing for the tranny, the thieves also got the reverse detent ball (holds the tranny in reverse). So I need to find a ball bearing or something near the same size. I did get the trans. filled with oil and t-case linkage hooked up. All there is left for tomorrow is bolting up the skidplate and rear driveshaft, and buying some ATF+4 to fill up the t-case.

Welp, thanks to Phil I have a fully operational computer now. As most of you know the jeep is back up and running great...no more drivetrain issues. I still have a cold start problem with the motor, it stumbles and backfires through the intake with with anything less than 3/4 throttle input or above like 3k rpm. Once it's warm it's fine. Now I just need to find the right size grease fittings for my rear control arms, get my MML and braided brake lines installed.

How would that cause a backfire through the intake? Just curious, not trying to say your not right or anything lol. My first guess was timing issue of some sort.

If the TPS is reading wrong but not bad enough to set a code when the throttle is opened up the motor could lean out and backfire. Unpluging the sensor puts the PCM in limp in mode and it takes a SWAG from the map sensor to generate a tps voltage. That trick will work with almost all of the sensors in an OBD2 system.

I did see a truck do something like this when the guy who resurfaced the flywheel messed up the crank sensor slots.

Just got this from the brown truck guy today...YAY!

Also got my intake and piping. Which of course looked nothing like the picture on the auction. I'm currently arguing that fact with the seller, who is not cooperating. I bought it strictly for the design of the piping, and what I wanted to do with it.

Ok, so here in the last few days I've tested my new winch, found solenoid bad which I already knew. Got my taurus fan installed and wired, with Ben's help. Only have low speed for the time being. Unsure which kind of relay I want to buy for the high speed. So far it runs great, no more annoying fan noise. Not sure if I can feel any power increase or not. Replaced my serpentine belt with one that bypasses the a/c compressor. Tested out my fan, let it idle for 10 or so minutes after driving it and let it get good and hot (around 240-250 degrees) then kicked on the fan and was back down a little under 210 in a couple minutes. Drove around a while, maybe 15 minutes without the fan on and she never rose above 210. Not sure yet if it'll suffice for summer driving with only low speed, but I plan on having High wired and ready to go in the next few weeks anyway. Later this week, possibly this weekend since i have friday, saturday, and sunday off I'm gonna get my pieces cut out for my steering box skid, and get them welded up. Anyone who wants to come over and help or just drink and watch is more than welcome. I'd still like to get those new rear shocks on sometime too. Or if you've got some wrenching to do and no tools or a warm place to do it you're more than welcome to come over too!!

Thanks for the help Ben!!

Thanks for the help Ben!!

how ya cutting that stuff? my wife loves me she bought me a new sawzall and then let me buy a torch...so if ya need either 1 let me know. and ya gotta love that ben guy too. hes pretty good at doin stuff/helpin ya out. :tu2:

I'm just gonna cut it using my big bad harbor freight angle grinder. I'm pretty sure the steel i have is around 3/16" thick.

Welp, I think I just decided on my next suspension modification. Since my stock control arms have 115k on them, and as noticed by some at the badlands the bushings are SHOT, I am gonna attempt a mid-arm build. I know lots of people are obsessed with long arms, but I don't see them having a real benefit to me. I'd lose a bunch of ground clearance, and the prices are just RIDICULOUS. So I need a set of stock jk control arms...all four in the front and the rear lowers. If it goes how I think it will, I will just need to move the frame mounts around 6 inches. Not sure how I'd do the rear uppers, since I have the Tri-4 link arms up there, unless I can find a way to extend them somehow. Should end up riding a little better, and hopefully flex a little better.

Welp, guess it's time for new replacement parts...

I've been having problems lately with the battery dying/refusing to start. I couldn't get it to start yesterday, and due to us not having power we stayed at her mom's house. Tonight I come home, jump start it, and let it idle for a while. Then her dad shows up with his electrician buddy to take home the generator and hook our power back up. Well I left it idling behind the garage for probably 30 minutes. We come outside to hook up the meter, and hear a loud POP! Look out behind the garage and there is a ton of steam rising up in the air. Go out to find the jeep stalled and steam pouring from the engine compartment and vents. Pop the hood and realize the top tank of my radiator has exploded. Boo. Guess I'll be buying that thermostat switch for the electric fan now...and a radiator...and a battery...and crossing my fingers nothing is jacked up in the motor. What a wonderful week!

I had the same thing happen to mine yesterday. went out to start it. had the heater on, my fan was on. and went out to check on it about 15 mins later, and steam is rolling out from the hood. I thought it was the water pump again. I let it cool off. and started back up. no over heat, but no heat coming out of the vents. I tore into it and the water pump was fine. the t-stat was fine. not sure what caused it, but i tryed to flush out the system in 5 degree weather. It sucked. reddish brown crap flowed out of it. I flushed the radiator, the block and the heater core. i still haven't got it back together to see if it will run alright. I hope its not a cracked head. if it is, im going to drop a 5.9 or 5.7 hemi into it. Im done with these damn 4.0l everyone has such good luck with them but me!!!

Sounds like somewhere something was froze up in the coolant lines and it created a blockage....

In a pinch that would work in your radiator too...

Nick, let me know when you want to do the wiring on your fan, I can help you get it all wired like mine, I haven't had any problems yet and it's peardy easy.

three position switch or the one you have but use only one speed on fan
two relays (you should have a few of these)
T-stat $17 auto zone
bla bla bla you know the rest :tu2:

Welp we'll see. Still looking at all my options. Hopefully it'll only be the radiator and battery I need to replace. Still unsure why the motor stalled though...

That can happen if it gets too hot. Hopefully nothing warped or cracked. if ya want, i got a pressure tester we can hook up once ya get another radiator in and see if anything else is leaking. Check your oil for coolant on the dipstick, and open the oil fill on the valve cover and see if theres coolant in there

may be ordering radiator this weekend, depending on what i purchase at the gun show. I can't even start the damn thing now. Had Jaimie's jeep jumped to it for 45 or so minutes and still would barely crank. Great...another $100 to spend on a damn battery.

I have one you can borrow if you need one. I took it out of my truck a year ago but I think it is still good. Let me know if you want to try it out.

Bad ground cable? have you checked the cables on both ends? If it's got a bad ground, it'll crank really slow...or just poor connections, my diesel wouldn't start unless you jumped it, but the batteries were only 2 years old, i pulled all 4 connections, wire brushed them, and Viola, it starts great!!

welp, went out and let the jeep run for a few minutes, dont want to overdo it seeing as there's no coolant in it. It now idles on it's own. But I found some things that distress me a little. Found a crack in the coil. Not sure if that's from vibration or heat or what, but it may be the cause of my idling problems when cold. Also found some wetness where the head meets the block. This thing has never leaked or seeped a bit since i've owned it. This is making me a little fearful that I blew the headgasket.

well, when ya get the radiator on we can pressure test it. If ya did pop the head gasket, as long as the head isnt warped, it wont be that hard to do. 4.0 head gaskets are cake

i agree with dicky... it won't be bad at all to replace a headgasket on a 4.0
and on the seepage, don't be a pussy... my old 4.0 had tons of wetness there... never had a problem with it.

it also had wetness inside the combustion chamber at one point...

I just find it weird that it would start seeping after i blow the radiator up?

Did you notice you're coils cracked too....the left bolt mount looks cracked...might be a bad ground there.

ya, id agree with ya. If it was just seeping all the time, i wouldnt care, but if i just noticed it after something like that happening, id be inclined to worry until i could pressure test it.

And ya, i bet that damn coil is the cause of your running issues. Would make sense, other than the code its throwing

Dude, you should check your coil. It looks a bit cracked. Check your relays too..

Radiator is here! But it's the wrong one. They sent me a 1 row, not a 2 row as the description stated. So if you're looking for a 2 row all aluminum radiator for $150 shipped ask me where I got it! If you dont mind recieving the wrong one and them shipping you the right one.

A big thank you to Ben for helping me change out my radiator today. Ran into a couple snags, broke the two right side bolts off that hold on my electric fan, so we had to use a little ingenuity to get that back on sufficiently. she seems to run ok, hasn't gone over about 205 yet. Then again it is like 20 some degrees outside. We'll see how she does tomorrow wheelin I guess. Maybe one day I'll actually get to the projects I've been meaning to, like rear shocks, rear diff cover, ebrakes, bleed brakes, change out clutch slave cylinder, re-route air intake, install thermostat switch for e-fan, change coil, swap in HP Dana 30, install new ball joints, convert said D30 to tj axleshafts, etc.....

Well tonight I swapped out coils with a decent one that Dick gave me, and no change in my cold problems. But I did get to replace the alternator!! I drove it out to donate plasma and noticed it running like shit most of the way there. radio cut out, wipers slowed, etc...My guage has read 0 volts since i rewired my fan to high speed after our little outting to giraffe genitals. Barely made it the 3 or so miles to my buddy's house.

Welp here's a little update for those that care (not many.) When I rewired my fan to run on high only it ran just fine for a week or two, then started blowing fuses. As soon as I put a new 30amp fuse in it blew it immediately. Hopefully as a temporary fix I replaced the 30 amp with a 40 amp fuse and packed the holder with dielectric grease. Still running dandy for the time being. Today with Andre's help I replaced my front lower control arms with my new Rubicon Express super flex arms. Rides MUCH better on the road. This weekend I'll replace the rear lowers, which should be a lot easier since I don't have to mess around with those damn cam bolts. Manually bled the brakes too but it still doesn't feel like the rears are getting enough pressure. We also replaced my bad idler pulley. We also found the right front wheel bearing to be a little loose, and the right front u-joint is bad.

This weekend's projects:
-Install rear lower control arms
-Install SOLID rear diff cover
-Wash jeep inside and out
-Fab up and install cowl intake
-Check fluids for contamination after my last submarine trip and change if necessary
-Change right front u-joint

Then she should be ready for the April Fools Run!!! Thanks for the help Andre!!

Got the rear arms in...and no more clunky noise on take off! Also installed my new, MUCH longer shocks. Installed new intake and filter, but didn't get started on the cowl intake yet. Tightened loose tie rod...damn aftermarket crap. Thanks again to Andre for help and use of the crap I don't have yet...

Welp, I haven't done a damn thing to the jeep lately. Barely staying afloat the way it is, let alone buying parts for the giant turd in the garage. Here soon I do plan to swap intake manifolds with the 2000+ one I have in the garage, sent my exhaust manifold back and get a new one, and maybe someday invest in a set of 35's to replace the stockers it's sitting on now. Still have my project HP30 in the garage, and am planning on removing some or all of my lift, doing the highline front fender mod, and moving the rear flares up 2 inches or so. Yeah yeah, I know, almost all of these mods are free, aside from the 35's...but with how life's been lately I've pretty much lost all ambition to work on that thing...which is sad because I could really use a little fun time. Oh well, I'm sure ya'll will see me eventually at one of the jeep meets or random parties, if I ever upgrade from this shit job.

Thanks for the help Ben!!

hey buddy where r you located at ?

woohoo!! gettin some work done on sunday. Hopefully completing the highline project. Swapping out rear springs, install rear shocks, cutting rear wheel wells and relocating flares, removing intake and exhaust manifolds, gasket match head/new intake manifold...I think that's it. Oh and beer...will be consuming beer, so I assume that very few things on this list will actually get completed.

Got the fender bolted back up on the drivers side. Will post some pics tonight, will hopefully have the pass. side done too. Anyone know if an evap canister is necessary?

is an evap canister neccesary? To run, no. will it set a light, yes. will it be legal, i dont think so, but not sure, might be one of those things where if it came factory its illegal to tamper with it

Lol, check engine lights I don't care about, it usually has one on anyway. And legality...who cares? We don't have emissions testing anyway.

hey there's 35's in the shed ass...oh yeah, and I drove 3 hours home from the Badlands on that U-Joint there...and the broken yoke, but that wasn't much of a concern.

had a feeling the joint was trashed, but didnt think the yoke was broken like that. when i took it apart it was only cracked, it finished breaking when we were removing it from the driveshaft.

ok, tonight got both fenders done, battery mount done, all lights back in place, and the a/c compressor removed. need to find a convenient spot for the washer fluid reservoir, which I've already got a spot eyeballed for it, and a place for the evap canister. Then the rear driveshaft's getting fixed and no more til after the move. Hopefully someone will come up with a set of wheels I can mount my 35's to. Either that or if someone knows where Philbert lives I'll go give his old lady the $50 he paid me and take my old wheels back.

I've actually been drivin her for the last few days...good news is no more weiner tires, 35's should be on this afternoon. Bad news is I can't use 4wd...t-case chain seems stretched all to shit. I've been reading up on 231 t-case upgrades and I might have to go junkyard shopping for a 231D out of a low mileage dakota or 1500 Ram. They come stock with the 1.25" chain instead of the 1" chain, and the parts are interchangeable.

well since it's really hard to drive the jeep and be underneath it to diagnose a problem, I found a serious front-end noise tonight with Andre's help. I still want to check the t-case chain because I know it's making noise, but I believe I might have destroyed the spiders in the d30 as well. Maybe roasting the tires through 3rd gear in front wheel drive wasn't the best idea I've ever had. Ya live, ya learn, then ya get Luvs...and park the jeep til the kid's old enough to drive, then they can work on it...

it was fun, and a good learning experience. and I now know not worth the $$ some places would charge you to mount them.

welp she's down yet again. apparently the front diff can only take so many 3 gear tire destroying take offs. let's add this up...3 dana 35s, one dana 30, one ax15, yup...that's about it.
what's become of my d30...
[attachment=0]0303001838.jpg[/attachment

Broke the carrier in half, stripped 2 spider gears, i think 3 or 4 broken teeth on ring gear, and a bearing race broken in half. I am getting better at taking stuff apart though, had this all out in 30 minutes or so. I'm just planning on swapping over both shafts with unit bearings, rotors, and calipers to the hp30, throwing in a set of 4.10's I should have shortly, and being done with it.

hp30 build is well underway...should be in by months' end

While waiting on parts to get the hp30 in I decided to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds. The exhaust was cracked and needs sent back for warranty and I have a newer style intake
manifold to swap as well. Got the intake all cleaned up inside and out and gave her a coat of paint. And as indecisive as I am tried a few different colors.

I'm kinda leaning toward the second one. It kinda sorta matches the jeep. The first one was more metallic, but I couldn't find a nozzle for my clear coat, so I grabbed one off another can which happened to be lithium grease. Waaaaaaayyy too much clear coat LOL.

welp, got bored while waiting for manifold so I decided to install my jks motor mount lift. got it all put back together when I broke off the fancy stud extender doohickey they give you with the kit. So a late night run to lowe's to find out they only have standard thread nuts to join two threaded rods together. so I made my own. will post pics later. tomorrow providing the rain holds off long enough she'll be up and running. Then time to start on the front axle. Debating if I should just bolt in the new one and keep the jeep driveable or start tearing it down to change all the parts with it out of the jeep.

New axle is in...ready to throw the wheels back on. Need to pick up a front driveshaft u-joint as one of my caps came off and the inside contained some very pretty shiny dust, and very few needle bearings lol. Plans for the next wrenching session include that, pulling the cover off my 8.8 to loctite and torque the ring gear bolts, and maybe rearranging some of the crap underneath my hood to make it look better after doing the highline fender/hood dealio. Huge thanks to Robert (Sparky) and wife for the help and entertaining me, and using your garage to do it all in!!

Welp HP30 project is done! She's back home, still need to reconnect sway bar and do a hillbilly alignment on it, and find out where my steering play is coming from. Bleed the brakes so I get my rears back and/or swap out proportioning valves. Will go junk yard shopping for a washer fluid reservoir this week sometime too.

Still need to align the front end...may do that tomorrow at work though. Sparky and I went shoppin today and I picked up a set of Lumina Z34 hood louvers and a washer fluid reservoir from a Suby 2.5RS that should fit wonderfully with my highline fender conversion. Also snagged a retractable work light from a cheby truck.

Froze my nuggets off putting them on and replacing my drag link today...they ride great, feels good to be on real tires again. On the bad side new drag link didn't affect my wandering issue. Guess I'll try re-aligning it...if not replacing the track bar. Will post some pics up tomorrow!!

I know you've had the spinners for awhile... but where did you get them?

I've got the paint, just waiting for a good warm day off to do the rings and the doors!

Tom I got those spinners from my grandpa whose been into cars for a good long time, I haven't seen too many for sale but I'd be willing to bet jcwhitney sells them...
