Well, it has begun. After obtaining a set of 76/77 Bronco axles last September, I was finally able to get some time to start working on them. Day 1: With my trusty not-so-safe angle grinder, I cut the spring perches and shock mounts off the Ford 9 rear end. I then swapped out the discs and smoothed out the high s. Leftover brackets (anybody want them?). This is something I found underneath one of the spring perch welds. No, I didn't maul the crap out of it with my angle grinder. This actually has quite a bit of weld on it still. I didn't want to make this one flush, as I don't want to make the hole bigger. It'll probably get filled up with weld when the new perches and shock mounts go on. I got to start on the front Dana 44. These radius arm stops are going to take a very very very long time. After doing a bunch of reading, I was afraid that they were cast on. But after doing a bit of cutting, I'm through the weld on one side, and I see axle housing underneath it (very relieved).

Originally, I wanted to have this done by the Turkey Run this year. But seeing as I haven't had much time to even work on anything, my new goal will be for the 2010 April Fools Day run. Here is my list of TODOs:
* Finish & install D44 * Finish & install Ford 9 * Belly-up w/ fabbed skidplate & crossmember * Spring-over with 2" (or smaller) springs (depending on how the D44 goes) + removal of body lift * De-rust and repair holes in body -- DONE * Flat fender the front * Herculine the inside * Make new CB antenna mount and move to passenger-side (drive-through madness) -- DONE * Fix tire carrier -- DONE * De-rust and repair my doors (they are pretty bad) -- DONE

Day 2: I managed to get the radius arm things and the coil spring perch removed. What I found interesting, is that I used 1 disc to remove everything on the Ford 9 and both radius arm mounts, but when I got to the coil spring mount it nearly ate an entire disc by itself! Also, the metal on the axle tube under the radius arm things looked like it had been laying on the deck of the Titanic. It took a bit to get all of the rust off of those s. I got a little deep on the radius arm thing cuts. The leftovers from today. Alan, do you want these pieces?

Day 3: I've decided to drive it this winter until I get my axles 90% ready to go under. I got all of my tires dismounted, beads cleaned, re-cored, and rebalanced at Discount Tire. I even managed to talk them into putting a 31" inner tube in my spare that some jackwad had slashed back at my old house. I got it home, and started to work on some of its odds and ends. Remember, the white wire on these means GROUND, the black and red are for the brake and tail lights. It messed with me a bit before I got it figured out. To save wear and tear on the local drive-thrus, I moved my CB antenna mount from the driver-side to the passenger side.

Day 4: Some of the rust patches that I've ignored for a couple of winters turned themselves into full-blown rust HOLES. I cut all of the infected metal out, and put the initial patch of fiberglass on them. I wire wheeled several pounds of rust off of my frame and off of the bottom of my tub. I then slathered everything with metal ready and slogged POR 15 all over everything. It looks like the creature from the black lagoon crapped all over it. I wrapped things up with an oil change and some fiberglass over the holes that were in my driver-side floorboard.

Days 5 & 6: I got the other taillight in and installed an electronic flasher (which subsequently got my turn signals working). I decided to treat my entire frame. I wire wheeled the whole thing off (thank God for a 2 inch body lift), metal ready'd all of it, and then gave it a healthy dose of POR15. The next day after the POR15 was nice and cured, I primer'd all of it, and then used several cans of hammerite on the whole thing. It looks a LOT better. I was getting down to the wire (was going camping the very next day), so I was hurried in my bondo and touchup of my fiberglassed rust holes on the driver side. I ran out of time sanding / bondoing / sanding / bondoing, and decided to just prime and paint where it was so I could get it done. After I painted it, I realized how faded the paint on my Jeep had become. I'm going to have to paint the whole side so it doesn't look weird (after I get everything else done and if I'm still motivated).

Day 7: Anybody who has seen my doors knows that they are trying to turn themselves back into iron ore. They are in rough shape, and I don't want to buy new doors (yet). So.. I decided to knock the rust off the driver side door and fiberglass the (numerous) rust holes that had emerged. I had bolt and washer plugging the hole where the non-functioning lock once was. I removed it and got it with some fiberglass as well. Yes, I deliberately ignored the window frame. The only thing holding it on in the back is a very thin badly-rusted piece of metal. I picked up my brother's mig welder the other day, and so I think I'm going to try to get creative with that at a later date. Until then, that corner is going to stay rotten.

Days 8 & 9: Worked some more on the doors. More fiberglass, more bondo. I tried my hand at mig welding. I seem to have reinvented the booger weld on one side, and other other side seems like it's "ok". After it cooled I grabbed and pulled at it and it seems solid. I'm going to weld a bar across the back and then reconstruct that part of the doorframe with fiberglass. That should be fun.

Days ??? (I'm done counting the days). I've mostly reconstructed the window frame, and have put an ungodly amount of fiberglass and bondo in numerous places. The door on the left has it's initial coat of POR15, and the door on the right has it's first (real) coat of paint. On both doors where I'm rebuilding the frames I'm still in the process of sanding, forming, refiberglassing, and bondoing. This is taking a LOT longer than I thought it would... which just motivates me more to not make it look like complete .

Today was not a good day. I cracked my windshield in 2 places and spiderwebbed it in the passenger top corner. To top it off, my windshield repair job looks like complete and utter . I don't have any pictures because I'm too ed off about all of it.

Ok.. pushing almost a year later, and I'm on the verge of some more upgrades. The wheels for my axles are in, along with numerous other parts. I'll post pics later.

The axles are in! A huge thanks goes out to macgyvr for the use of his garage & skillz, as well as chaz, Alan, Brad, and Chris for their help. There were too many pictures to post in here, so the link is here: http://www.poopworld.net/pictures/Anthology/September-2010/I dropped off the front / rear driveshafts at Fort Wayne Clutch this morning as well as stopped by the Brake Parts place on Sherman. As soon as Stan returns my email, I'll have the ball rolling on the drag link as well.
