Well as many of you already know, my engine blew the other day. With a lot of hard work from Ozzy, Andy, Chad, and Dan we were able to pull the driveline last night. We found a hole about 4 inches round in the side of the block. I guess 35's, me driving it, and the thoughts of badlands were more than the little engine that could.....could do.....
As soon as the $ is available there will be a 4.0 driveline going in. I can't wait to get behind the wheel of an automatic 4.0 with 4:10 gears.....

Ok, no 4.0
I bought the "350" Robby was selling. Not a 350 at all, it's a 327 with double hump heads. This should be just the kick in the ass the little TJ needs.
Now, what tranny would you use and why? Lets hear it fellas!!! I can't wait to hear the old girl rumble!!!!

axle wasn't goin anywhere in that pic. just bashing the skidplate on the rock ledge. Real men wheel with a manual, that 3rd leg comes in handy!

Spend a month with your right arm in a sling and then come talk to me about how automatics are for sissies!! Oh and before you say it, I did still drive it. Yes I went wheeling to, I didn't drive but still went out and that was just after surgery.
I've had plenty of manuals, I'm ready to to just focus on the terrain and have fun!!!

personal preference I guess. Manual trannies tend to be stronger and last longer. Don't have a tranny pan to worry about bashing or tearing a hole in. No worries about overheating the fluid or changing the fluid and filter every time you sink it in a hole. I guess wheeling an auto just seems really mundane to me.
Oh and Dee, may I suggest shooting your jeep with a coat or two of satin clear? Will improve the color of the flat black and make it last alot longer.

you say all that but how many times has your transmission been out of your jeep to replace it or the clutch?
I've never had the auto out of the baby jeep, its got over 160k on it, its been sunk, beat on, and wheeled pretty hard...
the only reason the one in the xjpopcanbuggy was replaced was reverse burnouts in the garage...otherwise there's no doubt in my mind it would still be functioning.

twice. once because it needed a clutch at 113k. The other because the rear end blew on the pavement and locked up the tranny in the process. You're right, the vatomatic soaks up alot of force that would normally be going to the rest of the drivetrain, but that just learns ya how to drive it. Like I said before, it all comes down to personal preference. Me? I'll buy an automatic when I'm too old drive a stick, or they no longer make them, if that's the case take me out behind the barn and put a bullet in my head.

I say auto but just keep an eye on your crawl ratio/gear ratio. Jeep transmissions have notoriously tall gearing down low. Which gives you better gear/crawl ratio. If you switch to a gm trans your not gonna have the low gearing. You'll have to bump up your axels ratios to compensate and that sucks for hwy use. Or get a better gear'd xfer case like a 4:1, 5:1, etc.... example: Jeep Transmission Gear Ratio Information Transmission 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Rev AX-5 3.93 2.33 1.45 1.00 0.85 4.74 AX-15 3.83 2.33 1.44 1.00 0.79 4.22 BA 10/5 3.39 2.33 1.44 1.00 0.79 SR-4 4.07 2.39 1.49 N/A N/A 3.95 T-4 4.03 2.37 1.50 1.00 N/A 3.76 T-5 4.03 2.37 1.50 1.00 0.86 3.76 T-18 4.02 2.41 1.41 1.00 N/A 4.73 T-18a 6.32 3.09 1.69 1.00 N/A 7.44 T-86 2.80 1.69 1.00 N/A N/A 3.80 T-98 6.40 3.09 1.69 1.00 N/A T-150 2.99 1.75 1.00 N/A N/A 3.17 T-176 3.52 2.27 1.46 1.00 N/A 3.52 T-177 3.82 2.29 1.46 1.00 N/A 3.82 T-178 3.00 2.08 1.47 1.00 N/A 3.01 Common Swap Transmission Gear Ratio Information Transmission 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Rev SM420 7.05 3.58 1.71 1.00 N/A 7.05 SM465 6.55 3.58 1.57 1.00 N/A TH350 2.52 1.52 1.00 N/A N/A TH400 2.48 1.48 1.00 N/A N/A 700R4 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70 N/A So iif you have an ax-15 now and switch to a 700r4.... ax-15 crawl ratio 1st gear with a 4.10 axel factory xfer case, 35" tire: 42.xx : 1 700r4 same everything else : 34.xx:1 Now, I wheeling auto's but Really you need to compensate for really outragous axel gears but if it's street driven then no way. You'll need to get some better low gear for your xfer case. A lot of those guys with competition rigs are running klune v's or atlas doublers, or over 5.xx:1 axel gears. Not street vehicles for the most part. Lots to think about other than just throwing a trans at it. You might be dissapointed with the results. Also i've packed a tj clutch so full of mud that it would not work anymore. That really sucks!

If you're set on an auto, I'd go with the 700R4 with a 4:1 transfer case. Good overdrive ratio for the street, and a decent low gear on the trail, but it could be a little pricey to get the 4:1 t-case.
If you're on a budget, like most of us, and can live with a manual, the T18/T19 or the SM465 can be adapted to most engines and t-cases and have a 6.3:1 first gear. The adapter kit is about $800 from Novak. I have the T18 in my CJ5 with a 304 and a Dana 20. In 1st gear, 4 low, I can let the clutch out and let it idle and it will climb over just about anything. (the SM465 is a little longer and won't fit a CJ5 or a TJ very well).

I am on a budget which is why I bought a beater to drive for now. I was thinking a 700R4, the only concern I have is my driveshaft length.
I have 4:10 gears in the axle and I don't know what's in the tcase. It's stock and was mated to the AX5, so what ever that is......
What tcases have a drivers side output and a good low gear range???

Everyone that competes is using an auto, rock racing, koh, xrra, we rock...all autos... mac 'just sayin' gyvr There is a huge difference between someone building and living with a trail rig/street driver vs a rig built for competition. Auto's are prevalent in that style of competition due to just that, it being a competition. They're not meandering through a woods or down a trail. They're not slow crawling a rock or ledge to make sure they're not doing any damage to their rig, or winding out a gear to get some decent tire through some thick slop. Not to mention the fact that he's getting alot more horsepower and torque to the wheels with a manual vs an automatic. The reasoning for the near extinction of the manual tranny?? People are getting soft. These generations don't want to have to work to do anything. They're too busy on their cell phones, drinking their Starschmucks, not parenting their kids in the back seat watching who knows what on 4 dvd screens and looking at their gps to find out the quickest route to the mall. By the way Dee...you are planning on swapping out that not-long-for-this-world D35 right?

I have 4:10 gears in the axle and I don't know what's in the tcase. It's stock and was mated to the AX5, so what ever that is......
What tcases have a drivers side output and a good low gear range??? I'm thinking np231 was the stock. I am probably wrong... I am doing an np203/205 doubler for my rig. I am gonna run a 4.56:1 axel ratio, and a th350(trans that I got from trey for a super price with the 203 stuff already bolted on). It's still gonna be about a grand for just the xfer case and thats with junk yard parts. If you use the 700r4(which has a better 1st gear ratio than my th350.) then you can do a 203/205 or 203/d300 doubler with driver side drop. But you will also have to make your 700r4 output look like a th350/th400/etc... The problem then is that you will probably have to cut up your floor for stuff to fit. Might just bolt that 350 to the stock jeep driveline and be done with it for now... Here are some links to look into. http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/doubler.htmhttp://www.jedsmachining.com/products.htmlAlso here is a link that has tons upon tons of info on trans and driveline. http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/index.htm

The d35 will eventually get swapped I'm sure. However it's not getting done right now.
I thought about leaving the Jeep tranny and tcase in her but there is no way the ax5 would handle the power coming from the 327.
Another option I have is to keep my np231 and mate it to the 700r4. I believe advance adapters has the adapter plate for em.

I have thought it through time and time again. I don't want to have to mess with wll the wiring crap!!! The 327 will be plenty of power and much easier!!!

But you have to realize the 327 will be carbed, easier to get to run in your jeep yes, but more reliable? I doubt it. Not to mention the extra for a tranny, adapter, t-case, driveshafts, shortly thereafter a rearend. Or rob a harness and computer from a wrecked zj and go to town. Much more reliable, definitely more reliable off-road, and no expensive adapters needed.

You guys act as if wheeling didn't start until efi was invented! Are you serious??? You know how many CJ's are out there running around with a carb, a bunch. I've heard all of the rob this, do that, blah! Who wants to do all that work just to have a Jeep that any Joe Shmoe can go buy? NOT ME!!
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all the info and advice and I will be the first to laugh when the carb chokes out on a hill the 1st time. Anyways it is what it is and I'm gonna have fun doing it!!!!

First off, the double hump heads came in two versions, as did the 327. Do you have mounts for power steering and the other accessories on the heads? Which 327 do you have, the large or small journals?
As far as your transfer case, go find a wrecked or blown up s10 blazer or Jimmy with the 4.3 in it. That 327 will bolt to that transmission and transfercase, the np231, hell, use the chevy transfer case as a doubler. Dont go buying that 500 dollar adapter. What you save, put towards axles. The ones you have won't last long with that V8.
If you really want fuel injection, get a 4bbl adapter for your manifold, put the chevy tbi on it, weld a bung for you O2 sensor, reflash your chip to only look at the O2, call it a day.

I don't know which heads they are, nor do I know on the block......I know this sounds funny but how would I use the 231 for a doubler??
I know the newer s10 have a push button 4x4.......

The s10 platform went to the 4l60E trans in 93 so I would stay away from that because your gonna need the wiring and tcu for that.
Pre 93 had the 700r4. If you get a 700 r4 your gonna need a tv cable adapter to adapt it to a carb and also your gonna need to either get a TC lockup kit or put in a TC lockup switch for the highway. If you don't do this you WILL burn that 700r4 to the ground.
The s10's came with np231c post 93 and np207 pre 93 mostly as well. But like I stated earlier you will loose some low end crawl ratio. You cannot double the 231c on itself though.

Maybe I,m missing something, but I don't think there enough room to run a doubler in a TJ. The doublers that I've seen are usually two t-cases bolted together and there is barely enough room for 1 t-case and a short drive shaft in the TJ.

The first 231 gets the rear half taken off of it. A block off plate gets put on it with mounting hole to attach the second one to. This combination is about one inch shorter than a stock 231 with a slip yoke.

Also if you stick with the 231 you can ger 4:1 low ranges for them, I think terra flex makes one.
Not sure on the $ on that though.

Not sure on the $ on that though. but if you're worried about too much power for the 231 the dodge version has the wide chain.

So I really don't know what the lockup kit is. What does it do? I am not above hillbillying anything, what does the switch go to?

Lockup kit controls the tourque convertor lock up on the highway. You can use a switch like said above but when you come off the highway or out of OD you need to remember to flip the switch.
The kits do it automatically. It's not really hillbilly to do the switch but if you forget to flip it on and off too much then you can burn up the trans.
You would have to search for the 700r4 and see what wires you;ll need to run for it to the tcc solonoid. It's pretty easy really.

Don't forget you are going to be putting a V8 in the thing. Probably going to put a shorty water pump on it, and move the engine forward quite a bit.

You are going to have to dig up the brackets that mount all your accessories to the waterpump.
You really ready to do a V8 swap? Is this a daily driver?

Well, ya got a good motor. If I remember correctly, it is a higher revving motor. With a transmission and transfercase, you're part way there

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htmseems these were mated with the 700r4 tranny at one point... i would assume then that it can handle the v8.. though if he tricks the motor out it might be a bit much for it.
