I traded the popcan buggy off. I then sold what I trade for.

Yesterday I bought a 2004 Jeep TJ unlmiited (LJ)
Its got the 4.0, auto, 231, d30/d44 and 76k miles.
Newer soft top, 32 in ATs with less than 1000 miles, newer Rough Country 2.5 inch lift.

Image

First off, it needs a tranny flush (no clue on the past tranny service and I always flush my mopar trannys), oil change, and rock rails. I'm also going to flush the diff fluids and it needs a front pinion seal. Going to try to get HD diff covers when I change the fluids. I also have a buddy with a winch plate and I have a winch in the garage that I can put on it.

Following that step, I'm going to be looking to build a reverse cut D30 for the front, gears, and possible traction device.
The rear main is weeping a little bit, so I may address that when I swap the front axle.

I will be taking it to Moab in October.

Nice, I've been looking around for an LJ, but haven't found one yet.

Not to hijack your thread into a different direction, but what gives the reverse cut gears the extra strength? I've never really researched the technical side of it. Seems like most people on various forums are more opinion than fact. Looks like a great start!

No extra strength per say, some would argue they aren't as strong. However, reverse cut will give you a high pinion.

btw... in the spirit of a true "Family Truckster", are you going to put a decal down the side to give it the appearance of wood paneling?

Reverse cut is stronger because the gears are using the drive side of the gear rather than the coast side of the gear.

On the front on a standard cut axle you are driving on the coast side. On the reverse cut you are on the drive side. Its said that it could be about 20% or so stronger to have a reverse cut axle. Plus the driveshaft is up higher and a bit less likely to get hit while you are wheeling it.

The opposite is true in the back, a standard cut is using the drive side of the gear and the reverse cut is using the coast side of the gear. Lots of hard core folks use the reverse cut to get the drive line up higher but are using the 'weaker' side of the gear. Some of the guys I know that are racing are actually switching back to standard rotations in the rear because the strength is worth more than the higher driveline.

So for a front axle, reverse cut is stronger, maybe not like using a bigger axle, but because of the way that the gear is used.

Chuck said it was the BG stuff that works in almost anything.

Do the 4sp trannies in these have a kick down linkage or is it something thats computer controlled?

I'm pretty sure they don't, didn't see one on mine. 04 was the last year KJ's got a cable throttle. So maybe after that everything got computer controlled in Jeep's line up.. Sorry I didn't text you back about that.

I went to bed after we were done texting...I was tired. No worries.

I posted here to remind both of us about it lol.

At first I thought that the LJ might be drive by wire...but realized what I was looking at was the throttle cable.
