I got a TJ today, I got rid of my vehicles for it...I wasn't using the truck and trailer and YJ like I had planned too. All of it was just sitting around, taking up space. Since I work at the same building Kari does, me and her just ride together. She couldn't drive the YJ and didn't like driving the truck. Plus we are gonna be wanting to start a family soon and I have been told parents have to give up things.

So with all that being said I wanted something that she could drive (its an auto), haul a kid around in, something that I could still take out on the light duty trails when I feel need and something to get me around in the snow. I wanted all that and yet still get the 'Jeep' feel. Since we didn't want another car payment as we still owe a little on the KJ, a new JK was out of the question, so I bought a TJ
Image

Here are the specs on it, 97, 4 cyl (I love the 2.5L, its the underdog) auto, D30 front D35 rear, brand now 30' all terrains I'm not sure what gears are in it. Its very peppy for it being what it is though. I will miss my old vehicles but they both needed work, the 1 ton was pricey to maintain, the YJ was getting to the point where it was pain to drive on the street, hence the reason I'm gonna leave this one pretty much stock, however it will get my old CB stuff and warn winch on it. I'm going to trade out the rims for some factory jeep ones in the shed. I will take more photos tommrrow or something.

*edit* oh yeah, its got a 2' body lift on it that I will probbely be removing, so if anybody is interested in that let me know, along with the bumpers, I'm gonna be replacing those as well.

All of my stuff went to baseline 4x4 in albion IN. They are great guys and people I could trust, which goes a long way with some of the people you find on craigslist. They made me a great deal.

I have made a good amount of progress on the Jeep. I got the homemade hitch off along with the tube bumper on the rear. Put a factory bumper on it. I removed the homemade side steps, still need to cut the brackets off the frame. The biggest thing is I removed the 2 inch body lift and put on a 1 inch body lift. I think the steering and the t-case shifter are a little happier and the body doesn't look so dorky sitting up in the air. Tonight I got rid of wired up weird speakers zip tied to the roll bar and installed a factory sound bar. I now have 4 working speakers, a dome light and two floorboard lights up front...fancy!

I just need to install my winch, factory front bumper with the tow hooks and switch it over to my factory rims in shed. I have also done a fluid fest on it. Thing is babied!

shoot me an offer if you are interested...

they mount using body bolts, no fab work needed....

I thought I would add some updated pictures of what all I have done, I have it pretty much where I'm gonna leave it at. However I'm still gonna change out the rims for a set of stockers, and either 1. find a set of rubicon rocker guards, or 2. just throw the little fender flare extensions on it. I haven't decided which yet. and then also throw my warn on the front.
Image
Image
Image

inside has some crappy seat covers on it, I found some "jeep" branded ones I wanna get for it, it does have a back seat too, for a baby seat when the time comes.
Image

I know we have all seen a 2.5 Liter before however I wanted to point out how I like the factory intake system for water fording, something a YJ didn't have from the factory..
Image

Kari likes it, and can drive it, again the reason for it being an auto and not a 5 speed. She wants to get a 4 door JK of some type when the liberty is payed off in a couple years. I'm pushing for a rubicon model..if we are gonna do it, why not DO IT! is what I'm saying lol

*edit* oh yeah, I still gotta grind off the old side step brackets that you see under the tub. I'm just pooped from working on it, so break time for now. Finally got the t-case shifting smooth and staying in what I put it in...

Well I ordered my Novak cable shifter kit for this yesterday, UPS says it should be here thursday. I'm getting a second wind with this Jeep and hopefully get everything fixed up on it. However I was bored and decided to start looking at how I'm gonna my make my YJ winch mount work on this. I think I can, just gotta drill a couple holes in the mounting plates and if nothing else I'm gonna make a trip to the steel yard and make my own mounts.

Image

I'm also gonna start working on getting the other stuff I kept off the YJ installed on it. However I wanna get my Novak T-case shifter installed before we get too much snow this winter so I'm hoping that it won't be to hard to install and get adjusted right and shifting good..We shall see! sheep

Well got some more stuff added to it..
A CB antenna, mount and CB in the cab for trail use..
Image

Also added a rear tow hook, its a factory TJ rear tow hook but in order to get it to work on the older TJ's you have to do some drilling..
Image

Also added Delay wipers..no longer have just low and high..
Image
Image

Next will be my Novak cable shifter...saving that for the weekend..

I had wondered if changing the control would give delay wipers. Should have done that. It was one thing that I missed.

Got a big project done on it for the most part..the novak shifter installed. Pretty easy install..and it shifts pretty good. For the first time ever I'm actually able to use 4 wheel drive since buying it. about time..
Everything installed except front driveshaft
Image

During the install I had to drive it to work and back, I don't work very far at all however I noticed the trans was shifting like complete shit..I'm thinking great another problem to fix however when getting home after work and dicking around with it I noticed I knocked the TV cable loose...which explained the problems I was having..put it back on and all was good
Image

Added another project to this list, a factory auto tran's skid.. Jeep didn't start putting these on TJ's until 03 so there will be drilling required for me but it should work, just like the factory rear tow hook did.
Image

Whats next? Well still need to get my winch on, and then just general maintenance for now. I wanna get it a tuffy center console since I only have the mini console.

Well while trying to track down while I was having heater issues I found this..the connector to my resistor.. :td:
Image

However I installed something that I think is kinda cool, yes it doesn't do anything and its there for just looks but it was 20 bucks and I think it looks cool, don't mind the mess, the dash was still kinda torn apart while I tracked down wiring and plugs.
Image

Also picked up these, its not a complete set but its the most important out of the set, I have found the rest of the books on ebay to complete set. The amount of info in these is crazy and I think they will be more helpful than my haynes manual which has a bunch of a YJ stuff in it rather TJ.
Image

I would like to pick up a set for my KJ...

Factory service manuals are usually always 500x better than a Haynes manual... actually, you might as well use your your Haynes manual for fire starter now.

To keep up with moose in photo's..
Here's my dog in the Jeep..
Image
and I found a gravel pile in the hood..I think I may like wheeling the auto instead of the 5 speed. Seem to crawl up on this nice. didn't go to far though, I don't have my auto tranny skid installed yet.

Nice thing about an auto is when it slows down just give it some gas. I like my auto, it allows me to me joy things on the trail.

I like pictures! And my jeep dog is bigger. 6 months old and 65 pounds

For those that remember philbert that used to be on here, well I stopped by his place this morning before going to work and left with these..

Image

They are 04willys (for those that remember him when he used to be on here) his old 2 inch rusty's off road coil springs. They are the rear springs for a TJ. I just gotta get fronts and 4 new shocks.. With that said, with a 2 inch lift anybody think I will need an SYE? Transfer case drop kit? I would really like to get by without either..

Other thing, I have this pile of coil springs in the parts shed..some coil springs from a ZJ, XJ's and a four door JK..What can I say I love spare jeep parts. Anyway anyone know how much lift ZJ springs would give a 4 banger TJ?

You won't need an SYE. I never had one on my TJ w/4" lift. All I had was a 1" tcase drop.

ZJ springs will on a TJ will lift it around an inch

Yes.
I didn't re-gear, my TJ had 3.73s from the factory, instead of the standard 3.08s, so gearing was about perfect.

How did the mounting go? Did you have to add spacers to the bolt heads would fit under the plate?

not sure what you mean by spacers, it came with new front swaybar bolts that are longer and then you can just reuse your stock tow hook bolts. If your jeep didn't come with front tow hooks which I think yours did then you will have to get new bolts. The none tow hook bolts wouldn't be long enough is why I think..

I ment like adding washers under to the bolt heads would hit the bumper

Why is that? just the way the warn bumper is designed? I want to buy some front springs for it to go with my rear and have a 2 inch lift but I want to wheel it first the way it is..

I woke up this morning and found someone took my rims and tires!
Image

Nah, I just replaced the tacky spray painted black rims with some stock steelies I had in the jeep parts shed. When I had the tires switched over I had them mount the tires black wall out...Its always gotta be about color I know..
Image

I also found and confirmed my power steering leak today, I fired it up had the wife sit in it and turn the wheel to full lock on each side. Its my power steering pressure switch. It must not be totally bad because from what I have read it should stall the engine on tight turns like into a park spot and what now. Never the less its getting replaced! Then I need to scrub down the whole front part of the drivers side frame rail that its dirtied up.. :td:

Are you going to replace the steel cable with synthetic? I ran steel cable for about a year just because I was too cheap to get the synthetic. I'd never go back. Your TJ is looking good. I think it needs a little mud on it though! :tu2:

Thanks!

I think that upgrade is in the future, I'm gonna actually use the winch a little more to at least get some use out of the current steel cable. I've only used the winch to play around with it here at home and pull a JK out at the badlands...

I recently complied all these parts for my Jeep. They will go on as soon as I have some extra money for an alinement afterwards. Once the lift is on, I would like to get some BFG M/T's in the 33 inch flavor and a rear TJ D44 with disc brakes. The front will most likely get a HP D30 front or TJ front D44 if I can find a deal I can't refuse on one. But like Macgyver says those are kinda over rated.. With the axle swap it will get gears and some kind of locking devise front and rear. Already have a locker for the front.. just gotta find something for the rear D44 when I get it.

Well the lift has kinda been put on hold for now until I get my trans issues straightened out. Did a Trans flush today, and dropped the pan to change the filter... It shifts really good in all gears on the first test drive. However it did act up twice during the first test drive. Once I got off the main to road to turn into my edition it starting acting normal again. What was it doing? Just didn't want to downshift into first gear when coming from a stop light. I had to manually put it in first in order to take off in first. Otherwise I would of been taking off in second. So my plan now is to drive it for a couple days and get all that fresh fluid flowing before I start worrying to much.
All the fluid used..this shit was pricey..
Image
At least it was a nice day to work on it..
Image
New filter in. When I pulled the pan off, everything was so clean (just a little trace of mud in the bottom of the pan yet) I felt I should of been wearing rubber gloves or something..
Image
and remember folks.. alway consult your FSM..
Image

Its gonna be a street queen for awhile, this is craziest thing I have messed up on one of my jeeps while on the trail. Yeah I know I'm not that hardcore..

Maybe one day my TJ can do this..

I have zero familiarity with this transmission, but does it have a torque converter lockup? I had the solenoid for the lockup quit working in my M onte Carlo years ago. The symptoms were similar to what you described there.

Anther thing I kept off the YJ when I traded it for my current TJ was my Alpine radio/cd player with iphone hook up. I finally got around to installing it today..I like it much better over the old radio that was in it. I'm still rocking stock speakers which will probably stay that way for awhile as I'm not really that big into sound systems, just wanna be able to listen to tunes..

Image

Video to prove it works..yeah the jeep was idling in the beginning

It actually is pieces of wood or particle board lol, the previous owner made it for the old radio but it fits the alpine. It works for now until I can find something different

Does your stereo have Blue Tooth or do you have a wired connection?

for my iPhone? Its a cable that hooks into the back of the stereo that I ran out from the bottom of the dash to my center console. I want to get a mount for the phone for my dash. Make it easier to use the turn by turn directions in Maps too then..

I was going to look into getting one of those cables for mine, just haven't yet. :tu2:

I'm collecting more parts..just need to find time to work on it..
My new to me HP Dana 30..
Image
XJ front driveshaft..
Image
and the aussie locker for the new D30.. its a temp locker..I would like to run ARB's front and rear.

I just need to find a TJ D44 and I'm set on axles. I kinda have a new vision for this TJ. As most know in a couple years we plan to get a 4 door JK. At that time I want to make a father/son TJ project, what I mean by that is basically put together a really cool TJ thats a streetable and wheelable jeep for my son when he becomes driving age. Now I know some of you are saying man thats a long time away! Well yeah your right it is! However everything put on this TJ is transferable to any other TJ platform and even on the LJ model jeeps. I figure when he becomes driving age, the TJ model will be basically like what a CJ model was and still is for my driving age era. A classic old jeep. I see no problem in finding a new frame, tub and other parts to "build" a cool Jeep TJ for my son to get the keys on his 16th or high school graduation. We will build it together, put hard work into it and bam surprise him later on and sign the title over. Then we will take our rigs wheeling somewhere..

*edit* oh yeah, I also plan on breaking him in and teaching him how to wheel and pick lines earlier on too. So he just doesn't get this nice TJ and not really know what to do with it. I don't see any harm in letting him take my jeep up a rock face or what not at the badlands.. when he is old enough and shows interest. I'm talking when he is like 14/ 15 years old.

I finished lifting my TJ today, its now got a 2 inch suspension lift and 1 inch body lift.. still rocking the 30 inch A/T tires for now. I need to finish my HP D30, and track down a TJ D44 for the rear. Then of course regear those axles. I should able to run at least a set of 33's I think with the new set up..
Coffee helps in the morning..
Image
The rear springs where really stuck to the axle.. it took some prying but they fell out later..
Image
Am I missing something?
Image
The new front springs and shocks are in (had already finished up the rear)
Image
and bam, this how she looks right now..
Image
Image
Next to my KJ..
Image

What gears do you think I should go with? I'm thinking 4.56? I have a 2.5L back by an auto..I wanna run 33's or 35's..

Looks great! I would go 4.88 if it were me. On a side note I just had Fw clutch rebuild, shorten, and add an 8.8 yoke to an xj front shaft for a spare. They did a great job. Just over $225 fyi

Added a yellow top, I thought my battery was going bad. It seemed weak when it would sit out for 16 hours or so at work and was a couple years old according to the date. Not to mention it was a cheap "vato zone" battery. I was gonna go red top but I had REALLY good luck with the yellow top in the YJ. Not mention with my warn and I wanna add a couple extra lights up front. Should work out good..

The TJ and I are getting tired of the cold weather, we don't mind the snow however!

The TJ will also be getting a set of new rims! Just your standard black steel rims. I bought a 4 off a guy from NAXJA, however won't receive them until winterfest at the badlands. For the time being though I picked a spare up. It was labeled as a blem, but I can't find anything wrong with it other than the 4 rims bought are "D" window style and this is a soft 8. I plan to find a shitty spare 33 inch tire to throw on the soft 8 anyway so it shouldn't be on the Jeep much unless I need it.

Well a couple weekends ago I made a junkyard run and brought back some goodies..

for starters, a V8 ZJ tie rod and a 4.0L throttle body for the 2.5L..
Image

Then to fix my jacked up rear drums.. a ZJ rear disc brake set up to swap on..
Image
They are currently a work in progress..

and a random photo of the Jeep enjoying the warm weather..

I have always thought the power steering gear box is so exposed on TJ's and LJ's.. so I finally got around to getting my skid plate on.. Since I'm still running the stock bumper, I found no easy way to install the second bumper bolt. With that said, it seems pretty stable with the 3 remaining bolts holding it on.
I think it turned out pretty good!
