i have a 98 grand cherokee with a full time transfer case that is bad the question is can i swap in a case out of a cherokee that way i have 2hi 4lo and 4 hi instead of just 4hi and 4 lo or select trac out of another grand is any of the above a direct replacement i would like to get rid of the full time case to try to improve milage a lil bit just didnt know what problems i might run into

Yes you can. I, too, will be doing that to my 98 Grand, just waiting on the guy to drop off my tcase on a deal we made about two years ago :bs:

ok didnt know i was reading some stuff on the net and they was talking about having to take both cases apart and switch stuff fromk one to another and didnt know wha was all involved

A buddy of mine put a xj transfer case in his 98 zj and yes, he did have to change the input shaft, because it was different from the aw4 in the cherokee to his zj with the 5.2

If you have a V8 I would recommend getting a 242 t-case, it has an all-time 4wd option. The all-time option in the 242 works through a differential rather than a viscous coupler like the 249 has. I did this swap a few years ago and I did have to change the input shaft because mine came from an xj. I just leave mine in all-time 4wd now because a V8 in a light vehicle in 2wd is not a very good thing on wet pavement.
