I broke something towing that pile home. I checked the diff in the front end, it's ok, so I pulled out my transfer case. I see something that is not right. Anybody have a source for 242 parts?

They symptom is that something makes nois on acceleration, almost like some gears are busted or stripped. I looked at the front diffy, it was ok, now I have the t-case apart and the extra planetary that chooses full time or part time has these pins welded in for the planet gears to ride on and the welds broke. The pins are still in but if they are turning, well then... I think I will get the case back in tonight or tomorrow and see if it still does the same thing. Hopefully the other problem is fixed so I can get 2wd now.

If worse come to worse, you could probably pick up a 231 alot cheaper than the 242, then you'll have part time, several years ago there was a right up on that swap on Qtech.
Dad was having some sort of problem, the guy at the tranny shop told dad that the fulltime cases must always have the front driveshaft in, because its what drives the pump inside, i had never heard, but could be?

seems to be some mis information in this thread....

scout what year is your ZJ? The ZJ primarily ran a np249 case. Which is full time all the time. It has a low range and a high range. Around 96ish? the low range became low lock, whereas before the low range was not a complete lock from front to back.

if you have a np242 is it a swapped in unit? kennedy the 242 has a low lock range, high range, high lock range, and 2 wd. The 242 is a very desirable case (IMO) for a vehicle that is on the street a lot (and towing) and wheeled from time to time.

a np242 would be a good swap into the ZJ (if you have a np249).

unfortunately i dont know of the perfect place to buy parts for one.

mac 'good luck' gyvr

It is a 98, came with a 249, I swapped in a 242 from an XJ. I had to swap out the input shaft and since then I can't it into 2wd.

Last weekend I pulled it out and swapped some parts, the planetary assembly and the chain. I think the chain stretched and was skipping teeth on the front output. Now it is in 2wd and doesn't make that noise.

The lube pump is driven by the rear output.
