MY gf has a 96ish ZJ and her overhead display always shows --. It will show the direction fine but the temp, dte, yada yada all show --. ANy clues?

Check the connections to the trip computer itself. That kinda indicates that it isn't getting a signal from the temp sensor or the ECU.
