its not that desirable. it only came in the grand cherokees. its a full time case. its a good case for the grand, but not for much else. if you get one you'll want a 96 or later they are the ones with the low lock. otherwise the pre 96 if you put it into low range theroretically you could only have one tire spining in low range...which if you want to race on the street in low range you can in a pre 96....

lots of guys have swapped 242s or 231s in to their grand cherokees to replace the 249...

I ganked a 242 from an XJ for my ZJ. The 249 has a viscous coupler that tends to go bad, and when that happens stuff breaks. I had a tcase in an 84 XJ that had a VC, and one day the chain decided to exit the case. It cost $100 to have it fixed, as it was a one year only item.

I chose a 249 because I can have 2wd, full time 4, part time 4, and 4 low.
I did have to swap the input shaft, but that wasn't much trouble for me.

yeah that's usual for a zj to have one, but a 93 is the mostlikely candidate. they even put the AW4 auto tranny in some of the 93s. and that's an XJ tranny. as a matter of fact thats what you probably have if you have a 4.0 and an auto. that's a great combo in a zj, i am not a big fan of the grands 46 or whatever model that auto tranny is.
